Tropical Décor

In trying to describe the character, these interiors often reveal an active curiosity and wanderlust. A quiet peaceful place to think, write and reflect – perhaps write your first novel or plan your next adventure. Home is a place away from work and noise, yet a fun place to mix a cocktail and chill. Again, play around with it.

What is tropical décor?

All about bringing nature into the home. The challenge in design is to imagine and create beautiful living environment that reflects a peaceful yet adventurous spirit.

Getting started

When choosing a color palette, think of escaping to an Island lined with white sandy beaches, green palms and exotic flowers, then think of layering these lush greens with ocean turquoise and variations of blue in your home.

Here are a few things to consider when creating your space.

  • Tropical prints, especially palm leaves, are popular in wall décor.
  • Furniture can be constructed of various woods, wicker, and rattan. Natural leather and floral fabrics work well with these pieces.
  • Go wild with animal prints.
  • Home accents might include hardbound books for the curious, along with some maps and telescopes for the explorer.
  • Many of these homes display collections of native trinkets and treasures from past adventures.

Lighting for a Tropical Décor

The lighting scheme for a tropical décor is most important when attempting to create that peaceful, easy-going environment. First of all, open the windows and let in the fresh air and natural light. We recommend using ceiling fans to create a natural breeze.

Chandeliers and pendants constructed with weathered and natural metals, wood, bamboo and woven rattan compliment the fabrics and furnishings. Cappa shells and beads. Fixtures that include ropes and clay beads are wonderful. Many fixtures and lamps incorporate palm leaves and even animal sculptures. The lighting should rustic yet elegant and worldly. Lanterns are a nice idea.

As always, layer your lighting to create a comfortable space. Ambient lighting for general illumination, task lighting for work spaces – I imagine a wonderful reading lamp next to your favorite worn leather chair. And accent lighting for artwork and focal points. Perhaps portable floor spots to light plants and throw natural shadows on the walls.
